In 2011, we discovered in our dark rooms the powerful Thor armed with his hammer Mjöllnir and in his shadow, a new villain, Loki. Became over time one of the most beloved characters of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). The god of lies is even today called an anti-hero. While a series in his name is scheduled for June 9 on Disney +, let's come back together on the supervillain Asgardian!
The god of discord
Before being a Marvel character, Loki was a god from Norse mythology. Son of the giant Laufey, Loki is not really part of the gods. Yet they accept him among themselves in Asgard.
What we know about the god of discord relates essentially to Snorri Sturluson's Edda , published in the 12th century. In it, we find most of the stories we know today of Norse mythology and many are talking about Loki.
God of malice, discord and deceit, Loki is in a way the equivalent of the Christian devil. Moreover, it is at the origin of many calamities, including creatures that will give rise to Ragnarök, Jörmungand, Fenrir and Hel.
Loki is also responsible for the death of Baldr, the most beloved of all the gods. For this, Odin will sentence him to imprisonment. Of course, this is not his only punishment. At any moment, and until Ragnarok, where he will free himself, a snake spits venom on his skull.
Marvel and Loki's mythological legacy
As for the Marvel version of the Norse god, it was born in 1962 in Journey into mystery n°85 and from his first steps, the character is relatively faithful to his mythical origins.
As in mythology, he is the adopted son of Odin and fiercely jealous of his half-brother Thor, the god of thunder. Responsible for many attacks on the hammer god, he is also, despite himself, responsible for the creation of the Avengers!
Until then, you are not too lost since these events are transcribed in the films of the Marvel universe, but Loki still has many things to show you… For example, did you know that he has already changed Thor into a frog or that he became, for a time, a woman?
Knowing that the series that bears his name is to take place in various parallel universes, we may have the chance to see different versions of Loki and Thor. Note that in one of these universes, the gems of infinity still exist, enough to give ideas to our horned god!
Loki is a controversial character, both angel and demon. Very present within the MCU, he still has many secrets to reveal. Knowing this, we hope you are motivated to learn more about the god of lies and his Loki series, soon available on Disney's streaming platform!
