A bit of history! It was in 2004 that landed on PS2 in Japan a game that went somewhat unnoticed here: Monster Hunter. It was at the end of 2005 that the series exploded with an opus that was so successful on PSP that it was enough to boost sales of the console in Japan. Then, Monster Hunter will continue its evolution and will make the heyday of the PSP and the 3DS. In Europe, Capcom's series received very good reviews but seemed to reach a niche audience due to some rather inaccessible mechanics and consoles aimed at that did not necessarily bring together all players. In 2018, everything changed with Monster Hunter: World released internationally on PS4 and Xbox One. Enough to break habits, and gather a new audience. The success will be far beyond all expectations.
A revival of the series
At the time of remakes, reboots, remastered and other "re" stuff, Capcom 's strategy has been much smarter. It must be said that the history of the Monster Hunter is generally quite anecdotal. If we had to summarize, it is the story of a hunter who hunts monsters.Even if the chatting with the camp leader or others is quite anecdotal, we will remember videos of presentations of monsters that snap (and make us say that we did well to take mega potions). So no need to worry about history. Instead, novelties are proposed such as fully open areas, a bestiary with small onions and real ecosystems with a way to use the terrain to its advantage against monsters, all served by graphics to match. We can also note an improved accessibility for beginners with clear tutorials and a really progressive difficulty curve. And the icing on the cake: an international release on PS4 and Xbox One (and a few months later on PC) to reach the biggest players. It was enough for Capcom to achieve the best start in its history with 7.5 million copies sold in just over a month. Just that!
A very addictive principle
Monster Hunter: World has that little something that can make you directly addicted if you stick to the principle of the game. Not all monsters will be featured in the main missions. We will also have to take care of free quests and contracts if we want to be able to forge the armor of our dreams. You will not finish searching the forge to fall on the piece of armor that will add you a bonus sought. Because yes, hunting each monster will allow you to collect various components that will be used to make new weapons and armor. And if you think that the farm is not your thing, know that Monster Hunter: World offers 14 fighting styles all very different, and that the patterns of the monsters are also very worked. What bring an excellent replayability to the title, especially if we take into account its plan of updates.
A consistent update plan
If we forget the few things in the store like emotes, stickers and other perfectly dispensable stuff, Monster Hunter: World has been rewarded with many free updates adding new monsters to hunt. Some are specific to the series like the Deviljho, or others are from collaborations like the Behemoth from Final Fantasy XIV. We will also note a collaboration with The Witcher with the presence of Geralt of Rivia in a special quest. But the added content is far too important to make a list. The bottom line is that the content of Monster Hunter: World is gargantuan. Especially since it has always arrived for free. Add to that the paid expansion Monster Hunter World: Iceborne released in September 2019. It offers a new area and a slew of new monsters. And this, without stopping the free updates and other events announced on the official website. But all the good things have an end.
Doom, the latest roar of Monster Hunter: World
It was at the beginning of October that the Doom, the ultimate challenge of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, was made available. It will mark the last addition of free content for a game that has managed to offer new releases regularly over nearly two and a half years. In the twilight of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, what can players expect from many who have been seduced not only by Capcom's title, but also by its constant and consistent evolution? So what can we hope for? A new extension? The possibility was quickly swept aside by Capcom. Iceborne would be the only expansion of Monster Hunter: World. The official answer came at the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase on September 17, 2020. The future is called Monster Hunter Rise. It is expected for March 26, 2021 exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
The return of Monster Hunter to Nintendo
After having greatly expanded its audience, an arrival of Monster Hunter on Switch promises to be an excellent operation for Nintendo. Indeed, players who had not yet been seduced by the hybrid console that is already a hit thanks to Nintendo licenses will offer a series of third-party publishers that are likely to boost sales of the console as were those of the PSP in 2005, but on a completely different level. Given the success that Monster Hunter: World has been, we can only imagine that many players will follow the transition. For those who refuse, they will be able to console themselves with an already dantesque content on the current opus. It remains to be seen what strategy Capcom will adopt in the future.
And then what?
We told you about video game adaptations in the cinema there are, it is important to note that Monster Hunter will soon have its film adaptation. As for Resident Evil, another Capcom franchise, we will find Paul W.S Anderson and his wife Mila Jovovich in the title role. We hope that the result will be less "nanardesque" for Monster Hunter. We will still be delighted with the presence of the one and only Ron Perlman in the cast! As for video games, given the recent success of the series, we can safely say that Monster Hunter has just entered its golden age. The future will tell us if the return to Switch will pay as well for Capcom as for Nintendo ! For the even more distant future, we could perhaps hope for new opuses. Why not on PS5, Xbox series X and PC? But it's still a bit early to talk about it. In any case, at Just Focus, we will be there for Monster Hunter Rise. And we predict that after Monster Hunter: World, we are not ready to stop killing monsters!
