We were all looking forward to it this season 8! This Sunday, October 22, all fans were at the rendezvous for the resumption of the emblematic series of the American channel AMC The Walking Dead.
Broadcast in France 24 hours later on OCS shock, the first episode of season 8 of The Walking Dead had promises to keep since it was also the 100th episode. What did we think? We tell you all about this recovery.
Spoilers alert!
We had already seen it last July, the new season of the post-apocalyptic zombie series announced, as shown in this poster, a fight between Rick and Negan. Just like the last seasons by the way…
"Mercy" for this beginning of season 8
For the first time in a long time, Rick and his team place their trust in other communities and together they team up to dethrone Negan. Everyone seems to be preparing in their own way, Rick in Alexandria, Ezekiel in his "kingdom" and Maggie, now at the head of the Hill. They all gathered their troops for a counterattack against Negan's Saviors. If the first minutes are difficult to follow, with many ellipses, including this famous image of bedridden Rick with a white beard, we quickly understand that his team is overtrained and very armed… and that they have developed a Machiavellian plan worthy of the best episodes! On their way to the Sanctuary, Rick's team is more motivated than ever to end the reign of the tyrannical Negan (the biggest villain in TWD history!).
Negan takes a knee
And it is with some satisfaction that we discover Rick and his gang, convinced that only violence can overcome this conflict, dislodge Negan on his own territory, with bagou. This is the first time we see the big bad guy in trouble. But think again, Negan is not easy prey. Although defeated at home, it should not be underestimated. With the cunning that we know him, even pushed to his limits, we know that he will still manage to surprise his enemies. And we imagine that the capture of the (poor) priest Gabriel should give Negan the perfect opportunity to remind everyone that his cruelty is limitless!
Rick Grimes, that hero
Let's go back to those ellipses, which we mentioned earlier. Already present in the trailer of this new season, the first striking image presented Rick Grimes bedridden, aged, and hinted that a jump in time of several years could take place during this 8th season. Some, more confused, showed Rick reminding his "army" of the reasons why combat is necessary. It must be said that he has accumulated his share of horrors during the previous seasons: whether it is the Governor, the cannibals, or more recently the death of Glenn & Abraham … He still seems as blinded by his thirst for revenge.
A blurred future
If we have no doubt about Negan's cruelty, he is still in a very difficult position at the end of the episode, surrounded by hundreds of zombies, his survival seems in danger. As for the brief sequences devoted to Carl, they show him very far from the Great War and emancipating himself from paternal authority to "sympathize" with a wandering survivor.Another unexplained element: on several occasions, Rick appears on the screen sweaty, his eyes reddened, announcing a crushing defeat. These different ellipses were accompanied by flashes focused on the peaceful future of Rick and his loved ones in Alexandria. Do these two options herald their future, which is bound to be compromised if the communities fail to destroy Negan?
One thing is certain, this 100th episode, which also marked the beginning of season 8, keeps all its promises.
