[Festival d'Avignon] Timeline, the new creation of the Fouic Théâtre Company

Jean-Christophe DOLLÉ offers us a relevant reflection on theatre, in a future where this art would be stripped to the extreme to the point of absurdity. Timeline is to be discovered at the Théâtre du Girasole at 22:30.

After the success of Mangez-le si voulez , which concluded a cycle on human folly, the Fouic Théâtre company embarks on Timeline, an ambitious exploration of its own art: theatre. In a show between comedy and satyr, we are embarked on a world where technological modernity could well lead to the death of the theater…

An actress arrives on stage, in a smoky and pale and chaotic setting. But, when it comes to speaking, she doesn't "feel" it. She can't find either her sentence or her emotion. From this maddening defeat of language, and therefore of dramatic art, begins the stampede. Various paths of deconstruction of the theatre followed. Different "attempts" will take place: death of the text, death of emotion, death of the spectator, and finally, death of time.

Indeed, the timeline is the time bar that scrolls under the video when watching a video on computer. Equipped with a cursor, we can quickly move this time, back and forth, and destroy the entire dramatic line of the show. Yet the magic happens. The spectators let themselves be drawn into this imaginary world.

Timeline Theatre

In this context, the actors find themselves on the stage for no real reason. Without a specific goal, they cannot play. And yet, these five will fight, struggle, to still offer spectators a counterpart of "their 25 €".

Very quickly, the tone is set: humor will run through this show. The actors serve a lively and striking text. We will remember, for example, the passage where the actors speak "with typos" because the text is "typed too fast on the computer" by the author pressed for time.

The scenic device mixes video projections, mobile scenography (very original) and interaction with the public. Even the fourth wall is gone. The spectator allows himself the right to go on stage to see if "it does something".

If several artists have already had the opportunity to tackle their own subject, theatre, by focusing on issues such as intermittency or public subsidies, Timeline is located in a more metaphysical universe. Through notions such as death, or absence, Timeline questions the future of theatre in our IT society, where speed and virtuality are the key words. The disappearance of the bodies could well lead to the disappearance of the theater…
