We told you a few weeks ago about the entry of 21 Jump Street into the classics of American comedy, and today we talk with you about its successor, 22 Jump Street.
You don't change a winning team
This new opus is an almost exact copy of the first film. Same actors, same mission, same story, everything is copied. The difference: we find our protagonists not in high school but in graduate school, at the MC State precisely. After the death of a drugged student, they will have to dismantle the entire network, and for that, they have only one clue: a photo of the deceased with what seems to be her dealer.
Schmidt and Jenko, aka Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, will have to put the cover back to accomplish the mission. And as in the first, our heroes are torn by their difference. Here the beautiful, tall and strong Jenko will be remembered by his love of youth: American football. For his part, Schmidt, abandoned, will have to solve the case alone.
The duo still works just as well, and the difference between the two will play an even bigger role in this film. We feel it as a spectator, and we even wonder what binds them. The clash of the two worlds is quite laughable, and gives rise to opposite scenes that play on clichés with humor. On the one hand the athletes without gray matter, and on the other the artist who wanders in his art, especially in a scene where Schmidt lets himself go in a slam as insane as funny. We don't tell you more.
But we lose efficiency
With this scenario of rupture, we lose the thread of the film. We note the comic situation between the two partners, who seem to repeatedly go beyond the framework of the professional or even friendship. The problem is this: the film will be based on this "tumultuous relationship" so to speak. And unfortunately, we lose efficiency. The plot is long to be set up, the break that will play the role of trigger will arrive late, and the quality of the scenario suffers.
Another problem that every film sequel has to deal with is redundancy. Succeeding in surpassing the first film, or at least not falling into the trap of repetition is not easy. Many sagas bear witness to this. Unfortunately, despite the synergy of the film similar to the first by its humor that works well, we must admit that 22 Jump Street remains far from the 21. The problem is not in the sequel itself, because we are happy to have a second opus of the adventures of our two under-gifted policemen. The real problem lies in the sheer repetition of all the elements that made the first a classic. The synopsis, the scenario, the characters, the mission: everything is worthy of the most beautiful copy and paste. Only the funds and premises of the Jump Street, recently moved to 22, have grown in stripes. To our great despair, we can't deny the fact that the only thing that allows us to enjoy the film is the sympathy we have for the duo, and the humor of the film.
22 Jump Street remains a funny and enjoyable movie to watch. But for fans of the first film, this second part is only a pale copy. Nothing new, everything is old as the famous saying tells us, and the disappointment is all the harder for those who expected a lot from this sequel.
