The madness of sneakers

Sneakers are a wardrobe essential. Whether they are used for sport, to give themselves a hype or to express their demands. It is a globalized product that brought in no less than 24.2 billion euros to Nike in 2018. The Playground exhibition invites visitors to discover the world of sneakers via various media (video, archives, testimonials, shoes…). With a selection of more than 50 pairs of shoes worn by sports icons, rappers…

Sneakers a social marker

The exhibition traces the history of the sneaker. Democratized in the twentieth century to play sports, it has become a true political and social symbol. In the 80s, black minorities personalized their shoes to stand out, an object symbolic of nonconformism. This trend towards personalization is now very widespread:

In Silicon Valley, sneakers are used as a status marker.

A fashion accessory prized by designers

The different fashion houses appropriate the sneaker. This is the case of Karl Lagerfeld in the 70s for Chloé. The trend is followed by Chanel, Prada, Balenciaga. Today, it has become a luxury accessory that can be worn with a designer outfit or a suit. This year, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Air Jordan, Nike would have made a collaboration with Dior. It was the Dior air that highlighted the perfect mix between street-wear style and luxury. The sale of this shoe has gathered no less than 5 million people for 8000 pairs marketed. A pair at no less than 2000 euros that is resold on the net 10 times its original price.

The exhibition is open from June 20, 2020 to January 10, 2021. For more information regarding reservations.
