Announcement of the Dutch cultural season 2020

Known for their bold contemporary architecture, leading Dutch institutions are offering an inspiring cultural season for 2020. As we are nice at JustFocus, we have prepared a small selection of exhibitions. Pack your bags and head to the culture of the Netherlands! Mestag Museum

March

  • From February 1 to May 10, 2020 hot weather at the Kunsthal with Ecstacy and his erotic photographs from the 1960s.
  • From February 21 to May 24, 2020, the Van Gogh Museum presents In the Picture. This exhibition returns to the central figure of the artist through self-portraits and crossed portraits of artists, in particular Vincent Van Gogh. No less than 75 portraits of artists from the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century will be presented. Among them: 27 portraits of Vincent Van Gogh, including the iconic self-portrait with a severed ear dating from 1889.
  • From February 26 to June 1, 2020, Georg Stubbs, an English painter of the eighteenth century, is honored at the Mauritshuis in The Hague. A great painter of horses, he began as a portraitist. The exhibition will bring together a set of equine anatomy drawings and paintings.
  • From 6 March to 28 June The Van Gogh Museum also manages the Mesdag Collection in The Hague, where the spring exhibition will be dedicated to the nonconformist and eccentric Mancini.
  • From 28 March to 1 June 2020 at the Kunsthal, the Extra Large exhibition will show tapestries by Gobelins, Picasso and Le Corbusier to Louise Bourgeois.
  • Until 1 July 2022, the Frans Hals is offering a semi-permanent exhibition on theheroes of Haarlem and the other masters.

April

  • From April 28 to August 23, 2020, Black Album and white cube a journey into art and music at the Kunsthal.

Wonderland Exhibition

June

  • From June 19 to August 23, 2020, Van Gogh remains in the spotlight at the Van Gogh Museum, but this time for his epistolary creation. We know that Vincent and Theo Van Gogh had a very regular epistolary relationship. The Van Gogh Museum now holds more than 800 of these letters. A selection of the most beautiful letters will be presented to visitors alongside works by the artist. Another way to discover Vincent's bubbling life.
  • From June 27 to October 31, 2020 summer will be enchanted at Kunsthal with Wonderland. It will be an immersive exhibition about Lewis Carroll and Alice in Wonderland.

July

  • From 2 July to 25 October 2020 at the Mauritshuis, it's a rather special event. Indeed, a painting restoration workshop will restore several paintings before the eyes of the public.

September

  • From September 19, 2020 to February 14, 2021, the year will end at the Kunsthal with Calder Reloaded on his place in Art History.

Groningermuseum

October

  • From 2 October 2020 to 10 January 2021, the Van Gogh Museum is offering an opulent and unprecedented exhibition in the Netherlands. This will focus on Klimt's work, from his gentle pastels to the monumentality of his portraits. This exhibition will trace the influence of the international avant-garde on the painter's work.
  • From 3 October 2020 to 17 January 2021, the Groningen Museum offers a lively exhibition: The Rolling Stone Unzipped! The Groningen Museum, built on the water, is located 6 hours by train from Paris (it is possible to go by plane to Amsterdam, then to make 2 hours by train) and received 300,000 visitors last year! The Groningen Museum offers, in partnership with many institutions, exhibitions on fashion, design and contemporary art. The exhibition The Rolling Stone Unzipped toured the world. After a start in London, she joined the USA and Asia before returning to Europe enriched with new documents and photographs. More than 400 objects collected in the 50-year Rolling Stone archives are shown to the public. Among them: demos of concert scenes, posters, diaries, musical instruments, stage clothes, the reconstruction of a recording studio, the reconstruction of the apartment of their beginnings, and even a big final surprise.

November

  • From 20 November 2020 to 5 April 2021 at the Mauritshuis, the exhibition Smell and the Golden Age proposes to show the sense of smell in painting, whether in everyday life or for health. The painting exhibition will be punctuated by medicinal olfactory terminals, but also smells of the new world (tobacco, chocolate, etc.)

Reserves of the Boijmans Museum

Fall 2020

Scheduled for autumn 2020 in a totally atypical building designed by MVRDV, the brand new reserves of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum will accommodate no less than 151,000 objects that are preserved, 4% are on display and 96% are on deposit. It will be possible to book to see some of the works on deposit with a speaker. Thus, for the cabinet of paintings, the visit is limited to 11 minutes for conservation reasons. If the entrance to the collections is paid, the one to the tree-lined terrace, accessible by elevator, will be free. Here, no traditional exhibitions but a place in motion where everyone can attend the life of a museum, see the rotations of works, but also find restaurants. There is already an annual event dedicated to children: a contemporary art fair where the price of each work is limited to 30 €. Parents are not admitted, leaving the child the total discovery of his artistic tastes. The building, completed in March 2020, will require 6 months of empty adjustments before welcoming the works and the public. The reserve areas are state-of-the-art when it comes to ventilation, lighting and humidity control. 2000 m² are even planned to accommodate private collections.
