The director will finish shooting in just a few days according to Variety.

After spending time in Hollywood directing Assassin's Creed, Justin Kurzel returned to his native Australia, filming and producing The True History of the Kelly Gang.

Based on a screenplay adapted by Shaun Grant from Peter Carey's novel of the same name (released in 2001 and awarded several times), the film focuses on the life of Ned Kelly (1854-1880). Ned Kelly is a hero in Australia for representing resistance against central government oppression but he was unjustly accused with his brother Dan of beating a man. Forced to flee, he will form a "gang", becoming a bushranger (outlaws experts of the Australian bush).

Part of the promising cast of the feature film is known: George MacKay (The Insurgents, Captain Fantastic) will play Kelly alongside Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Kurzel's wife Essie Davis (the last 2 parts of The Matrix). We also find Thomasin McKenzie (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies), Sean Keenan (The Island of Nim) and Harry Greenwood (Thou shalt not kill).

We also learn now that Charlie Hunnam, recently starring in King Arthur: The Legend of Excalibur and famous for his performances in The Lost City of Z and Pacific Rim, has also joined the project. Playing an as yet unknown role, the actor enthused Justin Kurzel with his performance:

"I'm happy Charlie has joined the cast. He created the most unique and distinct character in this film and it was a real pleasure to work with.»

    And he added:

"It has been a real honour to work with this talented team and to collaborate with eminent actors who are just as talented.»

The True History of the Kelly Gang is slated for release in 2019. Meanwhile, another western told the story of Ned Kelly in 2003.
