After a disorienting first season , holistic detective Dirk Gently embarks us on a new adventure that is hazardous.Caught by Blackwing, Dirk serves as a guinea pig. His trail leads Todd and Farah to Bergsberg. Dirk found, all three embark, in spite of themselves, in a new investigation without tail or head. Their goal: to find the boy. They don't know any more. Propelled into another world, they will have to face a depressed witch and put an end to the conflict threatening the peace of a magical parallel universe.
The second season of Dirk Gentry pushes the absurd to its climax. If season 1 seemed too perched, this one is even more so. In the first season, some aspects of the supernatural could be explained. A mad scientist, physics and electricity justifying the events. Season 2 touches on magic. The scenario worthy of a modern fairy tale, places the viewer in an extravagant setting.
Season 2 makes a risky bet. Detached from the real world, she plunges into an unexplored environment.The investigation conducted throughout this season 2 takes us even further than the first.The imaginary world mingles with the real world creating confusion and noise. The magical aspect of the season creates wacky situations out of the ordinary.
The fairy tale
The fairy tale side may at first seem childish. Villains are wizards with magic wands. The Romeo and Juliet-like love story fills the scene. The supernatural powers of each other save the characters at critical moments.
It is interesting to highlight, however, the unfolding of the story. Initially, no link can be created between events. A car falling from a tree, a water stain on the wall, a slide in an abandoned house… One thing leading to another, meaning is created. "Everything is connected" as Dirk Gently would say. A story without tail and head could quickly become tiresome. The explanations come in though, fairly quickly. One by one, they unravel the story without losing the viewer.
Humor
The humor makes the series unique. Word comedy is a basis for every episode. The English humor, fine and particular animates the series with as much enthusiasm as the events. Word games and unexpected reflections make each episode little pearls that make you smile. The situation comedy is also very present. The story is about a series of inexplicable events. They surprise the characters as much as the viewer. The characters bring their touch to this setting. Well-defined characters create an almost theatrical atmosphere.
This second season makes the series a rare pearl mixing humor and adventure brilliantly. The craziest situations are handled without excess. Director Max Landis created an atmosphere that was both intriguing and funny. Unfortunately, BBC will not renew the series for a 3rd season. It will be necessary to be satisfied with the first 2 available on Netflix.
