It is rare for a series to lose its lead actress after one season. And yet, Ruby Rose, who plays Kate Kane in Batwoman, has let her fans know that she is leaving the show broadcast on CW.

An abrupt departure

She announced the news through a press release:

"I made the very difficult decision not to come back for next season. This is not a decision I took lightly, as I have the utmost respect for the cast, the crew and everyone involved in the show. Whether it's in Vancouver or Los Angeles."

She adds:

"I'm beyond grateful to [executive producers] Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries. Not only for giving me this incredible opportunity, but also for welcoming me into the DC Universe they created so well. Thank you to Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who invested so much in the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made the first season a success. I'm really grateful for that."

Production seeks its next heroine

In a second press release Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contribution to the success of this first season and wish her all the best. No hard feelings, then! Due to her hasty departure from the show, the production studio is preparing to look for a new lead actress for season 2 which will arrive in 2021. They also specify that they want to find a new heroine for the series, of non-heterosexual preferences: "[We are] firmly committed to the second season of Batwoman and its long-term future. And we (along with the show's talented creative team) can't wait to share its new direction. Including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months" This choice is understandable. Batwoman was the first prime-time television series to feature a gay heroine at the helm.  At the time, however, the choice of the actress, who is openly gay, was strongly criticized on social networks. So much so that the actress was forced to disable her Twitter account and restrict her Instagram account. Remember, the 34-year-old Australian actress is not only an actress. Indeed, she has many hats: model, TV host, director, and even DJ!She is considered an icon of the LGBT community and is known for starring in Orange is the new black and Pitch Perfect 3. Even if she did not give specific reasons for her departure, we wish her all the best for the future!
