Kristel is the new voice of Madagascar. If you have not yet had the opportunity to hear it, you will have to listen because it may sing loud and clear soon in your headphones. Justfocus had the opportunity to ask him a few questions!

A voice was raised during the MaMA Event last year and it came back to us at the beginning of the year. That of Kristel Ratri, a young woman full of energy and originality that does not leave indifferent. His Rock project is definitely innovative and we were hooked. We had the pleasure of being able to ask some questions to this fireball from Madagascar.

What led you to start a musical career? What are the opportunities in Madagascar and how is it going in the field of music there?

In fact, I think it was the music that chose me. Even with all the vagaries of life, she did not let me go: I followed my vocation 😊 and made my passion my work.
For the group (and I hope for many others on Madagascar) the existence of the Libertalia label is a great opportunity to navigate to a wider horizon. Testing the international terrain is not easy and Libertalia offers us the financial means and the necessary network for this. Especially for us who didn't necessarily make traditional music.
The field of music in Madagascar is very popular: it is tropical music that is the most listened to, which leaves a little room for others. But we still have a loyal audience that follows us, even if we are not necessarily mediatized on TV, nor broadcast on local radio often.

What are your musical influences and what do you listen to on a daily basis?

I am very open, I listen to everything, whether inspiring or not. But to name a few, I would say: Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Selah Sue, Beyonce, Lower than Atlantis and many more 🙂.

Why did you choose the bass as a musical instrument? What do you like about this instrument?

The bass was like a no-brainer for me! I immediately had a crush (but really a boom) when I was about 8 years old with the sound of the great bass player Jaco Pastorius. Even if in the family the 6-string guitar was the instrument for 3 or 4 generations. By the way, it's my brother, Ben Kheli, the guitarist of the band 😀

How did the band come about and how did you end up taking the lead?

Me and my brother were already working as a duo. But because the music that attracted us needed more punch, in 2013 we decided to call on a drummer. For a few months drummers came and went. And one night, in concert, without rehearsal, an alchemy was born with Sylvano (the current drummer of the band) and we have not let go since (and I even married him 😁).
Being a family at the same time is the plus that even if I am on the front of the stage, and as you tell me "LEAD", we are all at the same time.
It is at 3 that we could be KRISTEL

Isn't it complicated to play with your brother and husband? How is the composition, rehearsals and on stage?

As I said, being a family is more of an advantage than a complication because no one is left out and everyone has their place in the group. As in the compositions for example: either composes each in our corner in acoustic. Then we work together on the arrangements, the samples if necessary, the lines… Everyone gives of himself!
Either in residence or in rehearsal: we let our imagination take us into a more collective composition.
Being a musical trio and a family at the same time has made that on stage, we are less stressed and more confident, because the chemistry that brought us together during this famous evening has been strengthened more and more and there is always one who catches up and reassures the other.

What are your texts about? How much of you do you put into it?

My texts tell nothing but say everything. I am talking about a life that is not banal, but where everyone can identify and recognize themselves. In some songs, you can see a part of my story. Some also come from the society where we live: I feed a lot on people, stories, feelings that some people can confide to me and that sometimes even touch me deeply.

Do they call you a feminist? How does it manifest itself in your music? What does it mean to you to be a feminist today?

Still for a few months I had a low self-esteem and self-confidence, but thanks to some people and work on myself I was able to gradually overcome this. Now I stand up as a strong and proud woman with my instrument and in the spotlight. In some songs, I evoke the fact that the woman must never let herself be done and this from several angles and aspects.I assume this image that I give. After everyone can make up their own mind and everyone has their opinion to say if I am a feminist or not.

What do you think of #Metoo and Time's Up?

I heard about his movements. I completely sympathize with the victims, the harassed women. I am against any violence against anyone.

Your first EP is very rock but we feel a desire to tint it with your origins; It doesn't just pass the language, but through other sounds. How would you define your music?

Our music is a part of ourselves: our feelings, our soul, our way of thinking passes through it. So whether there is a hue or sound of our origins or not, our music is always a reflection of ourselves.I would define our music inspired by everything. 😁

Your arrival in the music news in France allows a new opening and a question on music in the world.
Do you have any artists from Madagascar to recommend to us?

I think we will have beautiful discoveries during the Libertalia Festival this year in May in Madagascar (in Nosy-be more precisely) to follow …

What are your plans for this year? Do you plan to come back to France?

We have the project to release our first album in a few months and a tour is set up at the moment … And of course the France will be in 😄 it
