Review "Nobility": the new adaptation more than promising of the manhwa of Jae-Ho Son and Gwang-Su Lee!

On September 24, Crunchyroll published on their website the schedule of autumn novelties. Noblesse being one of them, so we watched the first two episodes for you!

Nobility: The latest production Crunchyroll Originals

Synopsis: "After 820 years of sleep, Raizel wakes up in modern civilization. This vampire holds the very special title of Nobility, a pure-blooded nobleman protector of all his fellows. In an attempt to protect Raizel, his servant Frankenstein enrolls him in Ye Ran High School where he learns to behave like a human today. However, the Union, a secret society that seeks to take over the world, sends improved humans, forcing Raizel to use his powerful power to protect those around him. The secrets of his long sleep are about to be revealed… »

Formerly, Noblesse is a Shōnen-style manhwa created by Jae-Ho Son and designed by Gwang-Su Lee. It was first published in South Korea on December 30, 2007 by Naver publisher in the print magazine Naver Webtoon. Little known in the West because it is largely surpassed by Japanese manga, manhwa is the name given to comics in Korea. As mentioned earlier, Nobility belongs to the Sonyung genre of manhwa which is the equivalent of Japanese Shōnen: manga aimed at young teenagers between 8 and 18 years old. That's what we find in adaptation. Indeed, in the latter, although the plot is focused on Raizel, the main character, we can already understand that the fate of two young high school students, Yû and Manabu will be totally turned upside down. It was therefore during the Comic Con 2019 in Seoul, that the adaptation of this manhwa was announced for October 2020. On October 7, 2020, the first episode was released on Crunchyroll!

Notice Episode 1: "Those we must protect"

If we had to give an opinion on this episode it would be: "? ». Everything is mixed, a lot of things seem to have happened before, so we don't understand the allusions or relationships between each character. Raizel (also called Rai), is already well integrated into his class and has even made two friends: Yû and Manabu. A man called M-21 is hosted (we would even say hidden because he seems to be wanted) by Rai and his faithful servant Frankenstein. To help him blend in with civilization, Frankenstein, the headmaster of Ye Ran High School, hires him as the school's security guard. When M-21 meets Yû and Manabu, he seems shocked to see them. Witnessing this scene Frankenstein tells Rai "It seems that their memory has been successfully erased, master". But what is he talking about? In short, we are lost.

Review Episode 2: "A reason to fight"

In this episode, two new characters appear: Seira and Regis, who are far from ordinary students. Indeed, Seira and Regis are vampires and therefore belong, like Rai, to the nobility. These two new protagonists arouse attention and mistrust with M-21, Frankenstein and Rai because the former are obviously there for a specific purpose. In this second episode released on October 14, we learn a little more about the Nobles, where they come from and why they are there. This gradually helps us to put the pieces of the puzzle together. It was at the end of this second episode that we realized that there is a completely different series of an episode called Nobility: Awakening released in 2016. This 30-minute long episode gives us all the answers to the questions we asked ourselves when watching the first episode. Indeed, it tells us everything that happened before the Noblesse series of 2020: who is M-21? Why is it sought? Why does he seem to know the two students Yû and Manabu? What happened in this hospital? Why did Frankenstein and Rai erase the memory of Yû and Manabu? And finally, who is Frankenstein? Everything seems to make sense as if by magic and the plot is much more understandable. So, don't make the same mistake as us: if you want to start this series, we advise you to start first with Nobility : Awakening and then watch the two episodes of Nobility. `

Our review of Noblesse episodes 1 and 2

Throughout the series, Noblesse offers us two totally different universes. On the one hand, we have young boys who live a totally ordinary life of high school students and teenagers: video games, bickering, love crushes are the three things that punctuate their lives. The scenes depicting them are light, luminous and emphasize the innocence of these characters. And on the other we have a much darker and darker world: vampires, werewolves, bloodthirsty murders, appear in dark, cold and gloomy scenes. The opposition between day and night, good and evil, innocence and vice are greatly highlighted in this series. Rai represents the bridge between the two worlds: as a kind of Yin and Yang.

Smooth animation

The animation meanwhile, offers us a refined and modern graphics. There are some rather slow but still necessary scenes. Just like scenes, in this case fights, very fast: the movements are linked with great fluidity and the details are at the rendezvous. The anime takes place in a contemporary era, we can see state-of-the-art smartphones, flat screens as well as modern cars. The clothing styles also seem to be up to date, despite the fact that our main character, Rai, is a certain age. This new series produced by Crunchyroll and Webtoon is very promising. We are looking forward to the sequel, and we obviously advise you to watch it.
