American dance with the exhibition " American choreographers at the Paris Opera, from Balanchine to Forsythe" is in the spotlight at the Palais Garnier until September 25, 2016!

If it is not given to everyone to become a star, if it is not given to everyone either to go and admire a ballet at the Opera, do not miss the opportunity to visit the Opera Garnier.

    Below are three reasons:

    1. The Phantom of the Opera
    2. The interior of the place is splendid
    3. The exhibition currently being held there is "American choreographers at the Paris Opera, from Balanchine to Forsythe".

An exhibition on dance at the Opera … So far so good.

But why American dance?Through this brand new exhibition, the BNF and the Opera invite us to (re)discover the emblematic figures of modern American dance who have marked the Opera Ballet.

If George Balanchine and William Forsythe are names that do not really speak to you, remember that they have in common the classical tradition.

    Classical dance

If the United States, a land of welcome and miscegenation, historically represents a real cultural breeding ground, it is above all synonymous with change for Europe. The exhibition allows us to explore the universe of its American artists regularly invited to the Paris Opera to stimulate a renewal from across the Atlantic.

    George Balanchine

Let's go back to the basics:

George Balanchine had his own style: dynamic, precise and vigorous movements always associated with a combination of complex, even acrobatic steps. It is THE choreographer who advocated formal beauty and technical virtuosity.

William Forsythe, meanwhile, is considered the "most European of Americans" choreographer. He has to his credit a hundred creations, several of which are commissions from prestigious international companies. He is also the new "associate choreographer" of the Paris Opera Ballet.

The exhibition "American Choreographers at the Paris Opera, from Balanchine to Forsythe" is the perfect opportunity to test your knowledge of American dance, or to discover how it became a phenomenon in the history of choreographic art.

Everything that happened between the period of George Balanchine and that of William Forsythe is evoked here in an exhibition in 4 parts.

    • "First exchanges" with America (1947-1972)
    • "The period of experimentation" (1973-1980)
    • "Eclectism and Plurality" (1980-1989)
    • After 1990

The route is chronological and thematic. The visitor discovers nearly seventy years of creations! Photographs, splendid costumes, models, preparatory notes for choreographies, videos, there is something for everyone!

DisplaysIn short, a beautiful exhibition to discover how American dance symbolizes modernity and liberation of the body through the liberation of movements. And what could be better than a video to illustrate the movement? Big favorite of the editorial staff concerning those broadcast during the exhibition.
