In an intimate room of the superb Théâtre de l'Epée de Bois, nestled in the heart of the Cartoucherie, the company Théâtre Les Pieds Nus installed its Cabaret Shakespeare from February 19 to March 3, 2018.

The Globe rebuilt on the ruins of Camerapolis

Succeeding in creating a coherent whole from various works of an author is not an easy task and sometimes gives a disappointing result. The Cabaret Shakespearnot only manages to sublimate excerpts from William Shakespeare's creations, but is in itself an exciting spectacle. The Court of Miracles is a secret cabaret that takes place despite the curfew. In the city of Camerapolis reigns a tyrant ready to do anything to keep the power he stole and silence the protests. The Court of Miracles is the only place where tongues can still express themselves freely and denounce the madness of the world and men. And what a pleasure for the ears to hear a frank speech supported by a diction and a theatrical game that are sorely lacking in current performances! Bastien Ossart's pen, funny, incisive and fair, blends perfectly with that of William Shakespeare to tell us the fall of Camerapolis.

Shakespeare Cabaret or the language of the heart

The Shakespeare Cabaret lives up to its name. Voice, dance and song mingle to fully express the feelings of the oversized characters. Painting itself makes its appearance in tableaux vivants that see their impact multiplied. Music and mask theatre are not to be outdone and bring that little touch of magic that makes this play so unique. The mix of arts and emotions is cleverly dosed, allowing particularly successful transitions. The passage from Bastien Ossart's text to that of William Shakespeare is recognized only by the knowledge of the dialogues of the latter's works, as the whole forms a coherent and dynamic whole. The Shakespeare Cabaret is a beautiful tribute to the work of William Shakespeare, but also to the theater and Man.

A golden company in a wooden theatre

The Théâtre de l'Epée de Bois with its magnificent décor lends itself perfectly to the staging of the Shakespeare Cabaret. In the small room where the performance takes place, the stage unfolds to the audience. The entire space is used to allow actors to evolve and bring the audience closer together. The staging, the fruit of the work of Bastien Ossart, is sparkling, full of particularly well found details. The actors move from character to character while narrating and acting in turn the story of Camerapolis. Touching, funny and fair, Iana Serena de Freitas, Antoine Melchior, Nevedya, Nataly Florez and Bastien Ossart are among those actors capable of giving life and soul to a show. The distribution of roles is neat and the acting of each is worth that of the others. A show such as the Shakespeare Cabaret is not one we see every day and is well worth the trip. The company Théâtre Les Pieds Nus is one of those that there is no doubt that it still reserves many surprises for an audience that it can only loyalize.

At the end of the show, it is certain that the mage Melchior was right on one point: the best play that has been, that is and that will be is the Shakespeare Cabaret !
