Two heroines in love with the hostility of society that gives them no place. Here is the pitch of the magnificent Invisible Kingdom that returns in the third and last volume published by HiComics.

Two women in turmoil

A couple at the end of the world in Invisible Kingdom In the previous volume of Invisible Kingdom, Grix and Vess run the Sundog, an ancient spaceship making deliveries for Lux, a company as tough as Amazon. Pursued by this company allied to a universal Church, they fled with their crew. They met a band of pirates and made an alliance with them for a time. But, deprived of free will, the two women chose the revolution and joined the resistance. In love with independence, they preferred to flee beyond the limits of the universe than to submit: the Point of No Return is an unknown domain filled with perils. This third and final volume marks the acceleration of the stakes: the powerful crack and the people rise again. The Sisters of the Resurrection reveal to Grix and Vess their purpose and the place of the two women in a plan involving the entire galaxy.

Inivisible Kingdom, a golden series

Ward's splendid drawing in Invisible Kingdom If Invisible Kingdom has received a very brilliant critical reception (an official selection of the FIBD 2021 and two awards in the United States), the series is still too little known in France. Screenwriter G. Willow Wilson is far from unknown because she created Miss Marvel, a character that will soon be found in the cinema in The Marvels 2. Wilson invents a strange religion whose followers use cryptic words that only initiates grasp. Deeply religious, she is far from apologizing for the clergy. It shows internal conflicts and the lure of power. Religion is becoming a market where you have to recruit the most followers. The screenwriter is never binary because resistance, if it seems to have a positive ideal, is as fundamentalist as the old faith. Through Lux, she denounces the greed of multinationals. More powerful than states, they respect no law and do not hesitate to kill. Lux gave consumers products to prevent them from thinking and revolting. Invisible Kingdom is based on a duo of strong characters who have evolved over the episodes. In the first volume, Vess entering a convent is part of a quest for purity and Grix ready to do anything to survive. Grix is placed as the spokesperson of an anti-Lux revolution but does not accept this position. Vess thinks he has found a religion free of corruption, but this group wants to use violence to triumph its doctrine and take the place at the top of the Church. Their strength comes from their love even if Vess cannot accept this carnal relationship forbidden by his faith. The other assets of the series are the drawing and colorist by Christian Ward who uses his digital tablet as a painting palette. It offers an impressionist and grandiose style. In the Point of No Return, he has fun inventing a planet surrounded by huge fluorescent algae. Further on, an explosion becomes fireworks. In this third volume, Invisible Kingdom closes in beauty with the talent of Christian Ward. Rarely has a comic book with such a committed subject had such vibrant colors. G. Willow Wilson puts forward a very strong love story. This series is a perfect cocktail of adventure, romance, politics and visual splendor. There is still time to discover it. If this release intrigues you, you can find other chronicles on HiComics with The Plot and Bleed Them Dry.
