In the future of American Ronin, corporations have become more powerful than states. To act, these multinationals have trained super-powerful agents from childhood, but one of them chooses to emancipate himself. Will he have to destroy the system to get there?

Alone Against All

A big boss from the top of his building looks at the void and in voice-over he shares with us his desires for suicide. We are in the business district of Hong Kong, one of the economic centers of the current globalized economy of which American Ronin offers a credible futuristic version. Big business has taken over. The disappearance of states that have become meaningless myths has made it possible to stop all these wars harmful to trade, but the democracy that limited their powers and therefore their profits has given way to absolute liberalism and therefore to the law of the strongest. Borders where laws no longer exist for the powerful who resort to a private militia. Indeed, conflicts between states known to all give way to a secret war between the pancorps to dominate the world. The army has been replaced by an elite group that eliminates opposing top executives. These killers were genetically modified and then trained to dedicate their lives to their corporation like samurai to their lord. They lost their free will, but one of them rejected this conditioning. Since then, this renegade samurai has used the teachings he received to oppose his former master, Barrett Cornell. This ronin has no identity, not even a first name but remains formidable. Not only is he a physically top warrior, but he knows all the espionage techniques. By its persuasive skills, a call can be as formidable as a machine gun. He is so good that his former employer, Lincoln's Eye, sends him a psychopathic killer, the nightmare man. Ronin injects itself with saliva and thanks to nanoparticles it can read the past of its future victim. His mental conditioning is so strong that he cries as he has satisfied a long-desired revenge. The nightmare man uses the same technology but more perversely, he travels into people's bad dreams to find and torture them. Although enemies, both are drug addicts who seek in the lives of others an escape from their poor lives.

A duo at the service of Ronin

With American Ronin, Panini comics continues the release in France of the publication of the label Awa Studios label which impresses with its first titles. This very young publishing house founded by two former collection directors at Marvel (Bill Jemas) and DC (Axel Alonso) is growing by very original projects like this series bringing together a rather atypical artistic duo. On one side, we find Peter Milligan in the script. This fifty-year-old British writer has been a reference (far too discreet) of comics since the 70s. Very prolific, he is as active for the most famous publishing houses (X-Men at Marvel or Hellblazer at DC) as for independent houses. With American Ronin, he is much freer in his narrative or his dialogues to propose an adult narrative. On the other hand, we find the Spanish cartoonist Aco. His very realistic style takes your breath away in incredible full pages and he does not hesitate to show violence. Very mysterious about his biography, his talent has been coming to light in recent years. The two found the perfect match to compose a thriller thrilling from the first disturbing words around a superb introductory page. We could even talk about a trio as Dean White seduces by bright and abundant colors. DNA and thriller in American Ronin American Ronin is a capitalist thriller, an action comic that mixes crime fiction and conflicts between big companies that like vampires feed on the blood of humanity. This brilliant success requires a powerful central figure who, having chosen independence, is threatened from all sides.
