While rumors are rife and filming is complete, Sony has just unveiled the release date of Soldado

The unexpected sequel to Denis Villeneuve's Sicario finally has a release date! We will have to wait until June 28, 2018 to see the tortured sicarius Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro) and the unscrupulous FBI agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin). The film seems to be a "spin-off" on the character of Del Toro… To learn more about the first film, we invite you to discover our opinion right here: http://www.justfocus.fr/cinema/critique-sicario-de-denis-villeneuve.html

This new installment, which still deals with Mexican cartels, is even expected to be the second episode of a trilogy according to Taylor Sheridan, the screenwriter of both films. The new darling of Hollywood also wrote Hell or High Water (Comancheria, in French go understand why…). He was especially noticed with his first feature film Wind River , which won the Best Director Award at the last Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category (and which will be released in theaters on August 30).

Very inspired by the current situation on the border between Mexico and the United States, Sheridan will focus this sequel on Benicio del Toro's troubled past. This character who steals the show from Emily Blunt in Sicario, had already undergone some adjustments. Denis Villeneuve tells us this in the DVD bonuses when he admits that Sheridan's first draft featured the character of Gillick much earlier in the story. In order to strengthen the mystery about him and deepen Emily Blunt's inner struggle, he had preferred to distill the information more sporadically.

In Soldado, exit the female character of the super cop to focus on the sicarius. In anticipation, a hunt in the past of Del Toro where Josh Brolin will resume service to support him in his vengeful epic. Their journey will take them beyond the borders of the United States. They will be joined by Catherine Keener, the only major female character announced to the cast.

On the production side, we can discover Stefano Sollima. The Italian proved his talent with his first feature film ACAB – All Cops Are Bastards. This 2012 film deals with the troubled relationship between the police and the Ultras in football stadiums. He also directed several episodes of the series Romanzo Criminale and Gomorrah. In short, a boy who knows how to talk about mobsters. The succession of Denis Villeneuve seems assured!

Note that this official date only concerns the United States. We stay on the spot for the French release date!
