"Once Upon a Time… in Movie Theater" – Special reopening Cinema

On the occasion of the reopening of cinemas on May 19, 2021 and after 200 days of closures that seemed endless, cinema distributors wanted to launch a large-scale marketing operation! Le Film Français magazine receives 16 distributors (Gaumont, The Jokers, Studio Canal, Disney, Warner Bros, JHR Films, Universal Pictures, …) in the Pathé Beaugrenelle cinema in the fifteenth arrondissement of Paris. 

Indeed, the return of cinemas with reduced tonnage, with high and restrictive health restrictions, is a challenge ready to be met. Distributors have had to review their release schedules. Arianne Toscan Du Plantier, Director of France and International Distribution at Gaumont explains that "the films will be very diversified and that the digital campaign has been readapted to the health context. We also learn that it will take 18 to 24 months for a return to normal.

FOCUS ON SUMMER MOVIES

This summer is special because of the health situation, but especially because of the French cinema releases that invite themselves to the party. Usually, big American blockbusters take all the place during this period, but distributors believe in the original content offered by French and foreign cinema.

Gaumont announces OSS 117 Red Alert in Black Africa (directed by Nicolas bedos) with Jean Dujardin. The film is finally scheduled for August 4, 2021. An explosive new trailer will be released soon.

At The Jokers, Sons of Philadelphia by Jérémie Guez was released on May 26. This American-French production tackles the themes of revenge mixing Irish and Italian mafia. The huge classic restored in 4K, a 35mm copy In the Mood for Love (Again)  by the great director Wong Kar-wai is scheduled to hit theaters on July 21, 2021 for the 20th anniversary of the film. Finally, EGO, a Finnish horror film, will be released on August 18, 2021. This film promises to be awkward and creepy.

Among the productions of Jour2fete , the documentary film Douce France scheduled for June 16, 2021 at the cinema, states an ecological aspect. Young high school students from the suburbs make a field survey between city and countryside. The theme of the film could be how to get another vision of youth? SISTERS with Isabelle Adjani is directed by Yamina Benguigui. A trip between France and Algeria. Three sisters meet again after many years and return to Algeria because of a dying father who took with him a terrible secret. Theatrical release on June 30, 2021.

The father of Nafi de Mamadou Dia. June 9, 2021 in cinemas. This Senegalese film is a love story that is shaken by the vision of two different Islams intertwined by traditions and marriage. A political aspect is added to the story. (JHR Films)

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Greville Wynne, a businessman of the 60s in An Ordinary Spy. Based on a true story, this spy film set during the Cold War is in the tradition of Bridge of Spies. Released on June 23, 2021. (SND)

Within Disney, Nomadland by Chloé Zhao with the immense Frances Mcdormand is released in theaters on June 9, 2021, the film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2020, then the Golden Globe for Best Film and the Oscar for Best Film in 2021. The director at the helm of the Marvel film, The Eternals, seems to offer a different tone and register. Obviously, Marvel's releases until the end of the year are still in the running. The next Kingsman is likely to be released at the end of the year!

17 BLOCKS is released on June 9, 2021 in theaters. This award-winning film/documentary is a very special concept, an African-American family filmed their daily life over three generations in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the United States! Adapted from the book Sister Benedetta, Between Saint and Lesbian by Judith v. Brown, Benedetta by Paul Verhoeven is inspired by real events. The end of the year holds beautiful and ambitious achievements.

Jane by Charlotte by Charlotte Gainsbourg will be released at the end of October in cinemas. It will certainly be a biopic about the daughter of the famous French singer-songwriter. (Day2party)

Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, December 2021. It is the new adaptation of the famous 1957 musical. Film by Kelly Reichardt with John Magaro – First Cow will be screened at the Centre Pompidou on 27 October 2021. The theatrical release is scheduled for June 9, 2021 in 400 theaters thanks to previews. It took two years for the film to arrive in France. In addition, the film is selected in official competition at the Berlinale 2020 and the Deauville American Film Festival 2020. (Disney)
