"Stay at home to save humanity." This is the mission we are all doing. To entertain us? Social networks, television, reading, board games… But for us, it's the movies! While a global crisis is underway, how is the coronavirus affecting the world of cinema?

We no longer tell you, all the cinemas in France have closed their doors. As for upcoming events, the Series Mania Festival has been cancelled and the Cannes Film Festival announced its postponement recently. Also, many big productions have decided to pause their shooting…

Avatar 2 :

While we were waiting for James Cameron's work in the cinema for December 15, 2021, its shooting in Wellington (New Zealand) has been postponed (again). On the other hand, as the film contains a lot of visual effects, the Weta Digital teams will be able to continue working on this. Here are the words of producer Jon Landau for The Hollywood Reporter:

"We made the decision to abstain, to continue working here in Los Angeles, and to come back a little later than we had planned. We are in the midst of a global crisis that goes far beyond the film industry. I think everyone must now do what they can (…) to bring down the curve."

Matrix 4 :

Directed by Lana Wachowski, this new opus is initially expected in theaters for May 19, 2021. Filming began around San Francisco and, while it was supposed to be continued in Berlin, Warner Bros. postponed filming in Germany.

The Batman :

Directed by Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves (Planet of the Apes – Supremacy), the shooting of the new feature film dedicated to the Dark Knight has been stopped for a period of two weeks.

Fantastic Beasts – Part 3 :

Unlike some films, this shoot did not even have the chance to begin. The start was scheduled for March 16 but has been canceled until further notice. In the meantime, you can still enjoy the first episode of Fantastic Beasts and the second installment, The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Mission Impossible 7 :

With filming planned in Venice during the famous Carnival, it was obvious that the film would be put on hold. At the same time, the epidemic was not invited to filming… Paramount studios have therefore interrupted filming and are now hesitating between two solutions: rewrite the script or shoot the Carnival scenes elsewhere than in Venice. Anyway, we won't see it in our cinemas anytime soon (and that's a shame, given the quality of the sixth opus).

Jurassic World – Dominion :

The shooting of the 3rd film of the saga began on February 25 in Hawaii. Universal has obviously stopped shooting all its films. This episode will, like the first, be directed by Colin Trevorrow.

King Richard:

With Will Smith at the head of this biopic, here is another film that has seen its shooting stop temporarily. Here, filming was underway in Los Angeles.

Apart from these very large productions, other films have been interrupted:

The Card Counter (five days before its end clap), Cinderella  (musical on hiatus for two weeks), Geechee  (shooting not started), Midnight In The Switchgrass (after a week of filming in Puerto Rico), Red Notice (Netflix feature film that was underway in Atlanta), Samaritan  (production in Atlanta stopped for at least two weeks),  Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings  (expected for February 2021, Marvel), Uncharted  (filming not started, stopped for 6 weeks) Faced with these announcements, our impatience will increase over time. Especially since these are highly anticipated films that will take a lot of delay in their shooting. Yet, despite our frustration, let's see the positive in this period that is not so dark for cinema! The confinement offers us a good excuse to discover many nuggets that have not yet crossed our path. If you'd like advice, don't hesitate to check out the film reviews from the JustFocus team! Good viewing!
