You have probably already seen it in the street or sneaking through traffic jams: the wheel! This motorized single-wheel, a strange and futuristic object, attracts all eyes on its way. For you, we have tested this new mode of travel at MobilityUrban, one of the pioneering brands on the market.Sensations guaranteed!

Anatomy of a wheel

The object itself fascinates; A wheel, two pedals, a motor, a battery, a gyroscope, that's the principle. The size of the wheel, the power of the engine or the autonomy of the battery induce the different uses that can be made of this vehicle. The choice of model depends on the use you want to make of it: punctual or daily travel, weight of the user, inclination of the ground.

The weight of the machine oscillates between 7kg and 22kg for a maximum recommended speed of 40km / h (beyond that, it is dangerous for the user and the machine). Several security mechanisms are in place: several speed indicative alarms and an alarm when the programmed speed limit is exceeded. Once this alarm is activated, a "til-back" automatically raises the pedals and brakes the machine.

The most powerful models can tow 110-120 kg at more than 30km/h over several kilometers.

The set is guaranteed for 2 years, except the lithium-ion battery which is guaranteed for 1 year. A full charge, ranging from 4h to 17h, allows, depending on the model, a range of 40 km to 120 km.

The wheel works with a smartphone application to make various adjustments.

To steer, it is advisable to use the GPS in sound mode. Some wheels even have speakers.

To operate and move, the machine analyzes the position of the body : by leaning forward, we move forward, and by straightening, we reduce the speed. For the most accustomed, by leaning back, you can even move back. Finally, to turn, it's the same, we turn our heads frankly in the desired direction and it's almost magical, we turn!

Fashion effect or groundswell?

Appeared a little more than five years ago in France, gyrowheels are certainly a niche market with 10,000 followers in Paris, but it is above all a lifestyle. Once accustomed, the wheel becomes like an extension of the body for enthusiasts.

This summer will be organized, on June 9 and 10, 2018, the Wheels Games, the first sporting events around the wheel, the electric scooter, etc. It is indeed possible to perform tricks, once its balance is found and with good practice.

If the wheel can be used from 7 to 89 years old, the general public still has some apprehension about this new mode of travel. The democratization of the gyrowheel is underway, but the weight of the device and its cost remain an obstacle to purchase. It is not advisable to take the first prices for your own safety.

Funny sensations

Once mounted on the wheel, we find the sensation of gliding and fluidity of the ski. There is a gliding and surprisingly comfortable side once you have relaxed and have enough speed to be stable. As the wheel analyzes the movements of the body, it is essential to be as relaxed as possible, and flexible on its joints. To move forward, you have to lean forward without bending, "like Michael Jackson". It's really surprising.

For those who want to test before taking the plunge, Mobilityurban offers free initiations with a monitor. And for those who have just started buying a wheel, it is possible to take a half-hour class during which is proposed a set of complementary exercises, ideal for starting well, with the advice of a passionate professional who also corrects small posture defects.
