The DVD box set of the second season of the iZombie series was released last March, the opportunity to rediscover the rich universe offered by this series that has become in the space of a year one of the flagship programs of the CW channel. Back on the 19 episodes composing this excellent season 2 and on the experience brought by the DVDs.
The series
As a reminder, the iZombie series features Liv Moore, a young emergency doctor from Seattle who, following a party gone wrong, metamorphosed into a zombie. Forced to abandon her promising career in the Emergency Department, she chose to become a forensic pathologist which allowed her to calm her hunger and the voices in her head by feeding on the brains of the deceased. However, there is a peculiarity: with each bite of the brain, Liv inherits the person's memories and part of his physical and mental abilities. That's when she decides to use these new abilities to help Lieutenant Clive Babineaux solve the most ambiguous criminal cases.
Just by reading this synopsis before even watching the trailer of season 1, we immediately feel the desire to discover the adventures of this character. With iZombie, the CW has succeeded in the bet of renewal, it was often judged for its lack of originality always offering the same series with the same mechanics. This time, things are different and iZombie stands out as the renewal program with endearing characters even if it may seem surprising in view of the synopsis. The first season had shown that iZombie was an extremely pleasant series to watch without a spat. It is a light series offering a very well crafted plot with the key, characters who, as they evolve over time take thickness and thus become endearing in the eyes of viewers. This season 2 offers us again all the ingredients that participated in the success of the previous season: action, quite surprising and unexpected reversals of situation, fresh corpses, but also culinary styles always more sensational for our heroine, Liv.
This second chapter of the series is the evolution of many of our characters, starting of course with Liv. Once again, she manages to pass a new milestone with the help of her acolytes. This character both endearing and disgusting because of his repulsive practices bluffs us every time. The other positive point of this second season is at the level of the gallery of villains praised by a sparkling cast.We can mention Steven Webber or David Anders. Others also deserve praise, but these two actors are the ones who really stand out. Hat!
Episode 19 provides answers to many questions raised throughout this season 2. As usual, the writers always have the intelligence to bring a slight humorous touch in the middle of the dramatic sequences. The result is simply perfect!
The DVD
In addition to 19 episodes, this DVD box set brings a real plus to the viewing. The guard image showing Liv holding a blood-sprinkled human brain in her right hand further reinforces this "bloodthirsty" side of the series. The back of the box set presents the strong characters of this second season in situations as complex and interesting as ever.
In terms of audio, we really have no reason to complain. The box includes 5 languages (Dutch, French and German in Dolby 2.0, English in 5.1, Spanish in 2.0). The only slight downside that exists all the same concerns some bonuses that are unfortunately neither translated nor subtitled. As for the visual quality of 19 episodes as well as that of the cut scenes, it is just excellent! Regardless of the medium used, the change is felt enormously. Among these bonuses, the one that delighted us the most is the one on the panel of the series at Comic-Con 2015. So, certainly, some will say that you can view it directly on YouTube without worry, but the argument does not really hold water. On the one hand, this bonus offers the panel in its entirety, which is not the case on some online videos. On the other hand, the visual quality is second to none.
In short, iZombie is an excellent entertainment featuring endearing and funny characters. It is carried by a very ambitious cast with talented actors and actresses. This DVD allows you to immerse yourself in the exciting universe of this series. It is worth a visit as well as its DVD with interesting features.
