Franco-Belgian comics: 2017 will be the year of film adaptations!

    When comics inspire cinema, it gives us a great year 2017! In addition to the many adaptations of comics such as Logan, Wonder Woman or Thor 3, we will be able to discover this year no less than six films inspired by comics. A quick overview of what awaits us…

     

    Alone – directed by David Moreau

    Leila, 16, wakes up late like every morning. Except that today, there is no one to press it. Where are his parents? She takes her bike and walks through her empty neighborhood. Everyone is gone. Thinking she is the only survivor of an unexplained disaster, she ends up meeting four other young people: Dodji, Yvan, Camille and Terry. Together, they will try to understand what happened, learn to survive in their world that has become hostile and paranormal. But are they really alone?

    Based on the comic strip by Vhelmann and Gazzotti published in the magazine Spirou and in album by Dupuis, the film Seul allows us to find the little band of friends. Suitable for a teenage audience, with a release planned during the winter holidays, on February 8th, we can only wish it a great success! Published since 2006, the series now has 10 albums (a first cycle of five, a second of four while the tenth inaugurates a third). Note that the work Seul was twice awarded a youth prize 9-12 years at the Angoulême Festival in 2007 and 2010! It is rumored that the entire series should have twenty albums in total, which still leaves many possible films!

     

    The Smurfs and the Lost Village – directed by Kelly Asbury

    Smurfette, burly Smurf, bespectacled Smurf and clumsy Smurf sneaked along a map to a mysterious village. But the path that leads to it is full of pitfalls, magical creatures and labyrinthine underground. They will also have to be extra careful since Gargamel is not far away and intends to stop them.

    After two film adaptations with live action and live actors, it's a real return to the roots that takes place for our little blue friends. A real animated film, original and in 3D that will allow us to laugh and shiver as in Peyo's comic strip, published by Dupuis and Le Lombard. It is on April 7, 2017 that we will be able to discover on our screens The Smurfs and the Lost Village, with the voices of Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) and Demi Lovato (Glee). A guaranteed cardboard!

     

    Boule et Bill 2 – directed by Pascal Bourdiaux

    Boule's family leads a happy and peaceful existence. Bill is perfectly integrated into this small family, Boule works well at school, his mother gives piano lessons at home while his father is a recognized draftsman.Everything changes when the publisher of his comics, gruff and cantankerous, rejects the work of Boule's father. She sees it as a big lack of inspiration due to the fact that her family lives in a very negative happiness about her creativity. Boule's father returns home with the firm intention of awakening his family from this happiness by generating a large number of "nonsense". Boule and Bill but also the mother will also start to derail this family "happiness" until the explosion.

    It is on April 12 that we will be able to discover in our dark rooms Boule and Bill 2. After a first film that was a hit in theaters despite harsh criticism, Franck Dubosc accompanied by Mathilde Seigner, is back to accompany the adventures of the famous little boy and his cocker spaniel. Created by Jean Roba in 1959, taken over since 2003 by Laurent Verron, the Boule et Bill series has 37 albums, published by Dupuis and Dargaux Benelux. A tender humorous work, highlighting friendship and nonsense. A success that will be without popular support!

     

    Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets – directed by Luc Besson

    In 2740, Valerian and Laureline are two spatio-temporal agents. Aboard their ship, the Intruder, they travel through space and time to accomplish the various missions entrusted to them by the Central Power. This new adventure takes them to the Alpha orbital station, home to 17 million people from all over the universe. Nearly 8,000 species exchange their knowledge, technologies and powers.     We are in front of one of the most anticipated films of the year 2017. With a budget of 170 million euros and an international cast (Dane DeHann, Cara Delevingne, Rihanna…), the adaptation of Valerian and Laureline by French director Luc Besson arrives in cinemas on July 26th! Based on the comic strip by Pierre Christin, Jean-Claude Mézières and Evelyne Tranlé, which first appeared in 1967 in the magazine Pilote, the film promises to be a great success. With 23 albums on the clock, if the success is at the rendezvous, it is easy to imagine Luc Besson directing other films. To discover without waiting for the day of its release! This year's Angoulême Festival is devoting a major exhibition to him.

     

    Le Petit Spirou – directed by Nicolas Bary

    Petit Spirou, like all his family before him, has a professional destiny mapped out. When his mother tells him that he will join the school of bellboys at the beginning of the next school year, Petit Spirou, with the help of his friends, will take advantage of his last days of school to declare his love to Suzette.     On October 18th, you have an appointment with the most scoundrel of little boys! The most famous bellhop in comics finally has his own movie.Created by Tome and Janry in 1987, Le Petit Spirou has 18 albums published by Dupuis. The adaptation is carried by a 4-star cast composed of Pierre Richard, François Damiens, Natacha Régnier and Philippe Katerine. Note that this is the very first time that the character of Spirou comes to life on the big screen, after several animated series.

     

    Zombiellenium – directed by Arthur de Pins

    In the amusement park of Zombillenium, monsters are not in good spirits. In this amusement park, employees are dead hired to scare visitors. But it must be said that being a monster, well it's not funny every day!

    Also in theaters on October 18, it is the strange world of Zombiellenium that opens to you. Directed by Arthur de Pins, also a cartoonist, this adaptation of his own creation should mark the last quarter of 2017. We trust the gentleman to highlight his universe, with three albums published by Dupuis since 2010.
