Like pretty much all of this year 2020, Halloween will be a little different and more in Netflix and Chill mode. Exit the evening with friends in your favorite bar and / or club dressed in your scariest suit. Curfew requires, there is more chance that you spend this evening at home, in your sofa, under the plaid.
But… Not too chill either: the streaming giant has, in September, started releasing horror movies and series. The choice is wide and there is something for everyone, from the most cautious to the most seasoned.
Here is a small Netflix selection to best prepare this Halloween 2020 confined.
Ratched, season 1 – Released on September 18, 2020
This is the new creation of Ryan Murphy (American Horror story): the story of Mildred Ratched, the nurse of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", by Milos Forman.
1947, California. Ratched, a cold, calculating and evil character, imposes his law in Lucia's psychiatric hospital. Played by actress Sarah Paulson (Desperate Housewives, American Horror Story), the nurse crosses, among others, the path of Lenore Osgood (Sharon Stone), an eccentric billionaire thirsty for revenge and always accompanied by her little monkey on her shoulder.
References to Alfted Hitchcock, Quentin Tarantino or Wes Anderson. No jumpscare, no ghosts but a colorful, heavy, bloody atmosphere. You are now implicated in each of the nurse's murders.
Not convinced? Netflix has more than one trick up its sleeve with "The Haunting of Hill House." Chills and startles guaranteed for a real Halloween evening…
The Haunting Of Hill House, season 1 – Released October 12, 2018
Mike Flanagan offers an adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel, a horror classic: a haunted house, which torments an entire family, the Crains.
A story seen and reviewed and yet, the director manages to keep us in suspense for 10 hours. The creator and the writers knew how to keep the scriptwriting codes of the horror film. You will meet the "Lady with the Crooked Neck". Nell, the youngest and you, will be the only ones who can see her.
The greatest strength of "The Haunting Of Hill House" lies in the worked psychology of its characters, all traumatized, each in his own way, by the haunted house of their childhood. Their anxieties, their neuroses told in the present, are explained by terrifying flashbacks.
In short, enough to startle you and give you cold sweats a good part of the evening and night. And for those who have already binge watched all season, the second " The Haunting of Bly Manor" was released on October 9, and obviously honors the first.
And if you are a little too cautious for this series, here is a horror film under the sign of comedy and absurdity.
Hubie Halloween – Released October 7, 2020
Adam Sandler is the star of this regressive film, mixing burlesque and grotesque, created by Steven Brill. He embodies the character of Hubie Dubois, an adult of the retarded teen type: simple, very very nice and promising.
Hubie loves Halloween and lives in Salem, a city known for the trial and execution of witches. It's a bit like the capital of Halloween after all. He therefore feels invested with a very important mission: the evening of October 31 must go smoothly… This is obviously a failure. And we then witness all the escapades of this character, at first annoying but finally endearing.
Everything is there: costumes more too much than horrific, "disturbing" disappearances, pranks, a love story and a happy ending. In short, an American Halloween. Do not expect a great movie of the 7th art with Hubie Halloween, but rather to unplug your brain and maybe even laugh a little.
Netflix obviously offers an infinite choice, enough to spice up your evening of October 31, 2020. And happy Halloween confined!
