The Locarno Festival will be held from 1 to 11 August 2018. This festival honours international auteur cinema. The Swiss-Italian city of Locarno is hosting the event for the 71st year.
The Locarno Festival has been celebrating auteur cinema since 1946. Despite its age, the festival remains in the shadow of its colleagues, Cannes, Deauville or the Berlinale. However, the Locarno Film Festival has a few gems and welcomes big names from the film world. Many previews are on the program of the 2018 edition. Equalizer 2 with Denzel Washington or Blackkklansman by Spike Lee will be broadcast. As for French films, Les beaux esprits by Viannez Lebasque should open the ball. I feel good by Benoît Delépine and Gustave Kervern, with Jean Dujardin and Yolande Moreau, will close the festival. For the unreleased, also take a look at the side of Argentine cinema. La Flor is a film by Mariano Llinas that lasts… 815 minutes! That's 14 hours of film. The work is offered in tranches of different sizes to the public.
Tributes in burst
The 2018 edition will be the last organized by Carlo Chatrian. Arriving in Switzerland in 2012, the artistic director changed his tune and left in September to take charge of the Berlinale. Carlo Chatrian's replacement is not yet known. Locarno is known for its Retrospectives. This year's festival honors Leo McCarey, a burlesque director who has worked with Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Brothers. For the 71st edition, the watchword seems to be "lightness".
"The reality that happens to us through the films is not joyful. We try not to limit ourselves to looks of suffering," explains Carlo Chatrian.
In the international selection, it is the women who stand out. Films featuring strong, courageous women. The filmmakers wrote their "love letter to women." The Golden Leopard, the festival's ultimate award, will be awarded to Bruno Dumont, French director and screenwriter, author of Camille Claudel 1915 and Jeannette, l'enfance de Jeanne d'Arc.
