The Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan (2008).

The Dark Knight is certainly not the only superhero movie that can be watched on Netflix. However, if you only have to choose one, choose this one. TDK is the second installment in the Dark Knight trilogy. This is the myth of Batman revised in the sauce of Christopher Nolan. Namely a powerful thriller, political and urban, about what America is like post-September 11. An America anxious and panicked in the face of a sordid threat that is the Joker. The Dark Knight is a true masterpiece, awarded at the Oscars for the game of fire Heath Leader in Joker, who embodies one of the best villains in the history of the 7th art. It is also certainly one of Christopher Nolan's best films, part of whose filmography can be found on Netflix, which is undoubtedly worth checking out.

The Machinist by Brad Anderson (2004).

themachinist bmyns1 Some essential movies on Netflix to pass the time...

With The Machinist, here is the second film on the list to have Christian Bale as the lead actor, which is a great performance on his part. The Machinist is a truly creepy and scary film about a worker, extremely thin, who has not slept for a year, who begins to lose sight of what is real and what is not. The Machinist is a scary and disturbing film, which questions many things: dehumanization in the context of assembly line work, the notion of guilt, the loss of one's bearings… With its gray and desaturated aesthetic to the point that we verge on black and white, Christian Bale who put his life in danger in terms of his health by losing 28 kg for the film, and its insane twist, The Machinist is a work apart, truly disturbing and scary, which makes it a much more interesting film than most horror movies you will see at the cinema this summer.

Mean Streets (1973) Martin Scorsese.

Mean Streets is Scorsese's third feature film after Who is Knocking at My Door and Bertha Boxar, a Roger Corman production. It is also his first masterpiece. All of Scorsese's future filmography is in this film: the color red, the violence, the gangsters, the original soundtrack provided and varied, New York, the gangs of thugs, the petty trafficking, the relationship with religion, Harvey Keitel, the Italian-Americans, the Stones and especially, above all, Robert de Niro… But instead of explaining why Mean Streets is a masterpiece (is there really any need for further explanation?), why not just show the most striking scene of this film, and one of the most significant in the history of cinema?

Swiss Army Man (2016) by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan.

swiss army man Some essential movies on Netflix to pass the time...

Swiss Army Man is definitely one of the strangest movies you'll get to see on Netflix. The pitch? Hank, a man lost in his life and in nature, discovers a mysterious petomane corpse (played by Daniel Radcliffe. Yes Harry Potter himself) and made an extraordinary journey… If only for the curiosity to see Daniel Radcliffe play a petomane corpse. Announcing itself as a real comedy inventing a new genre, that of the zombie comedy, Swiss Army Man promises a film that promises to be great anything, in short the kind of film that we see quite little, to our great regret.

La Vie d'Adèle (2013) by Abdellatif Kechiche.

La Vie d Adele sera interdit aux moins de 17 ans aux Etats Unis reference Some essential movies on Netflix to pass the time...

Palme d'Or in 2013, Steven Spielberg said about it:

It is the story of a deep, beautiful love. The director did not restrain the narrative at all. We were under the spell of the film, with great actresses. The director allowed the characters to really come to life.

And this one is right. La Vie d'Adèle is a fascinating love story, tragic and brutal, which corresponds perfectly to the brutality and violence of the feelings that invade the two heroines. But, in the end, it is also a film about the difference between social classes, about the difficulty of loving each other when you come from different social backgrounds (the class struggle introduced in a lesbian love story: you have to be called Kechiche). Recently added on Netflix, La Vie D'Adèle , despite the controversies concerning the unrealistic sex scenes and the shooting conditions, is a real tragic love story, which deserves to take 2h30 of its time to see it.

Minority Report (2002) by Steven Spielberg.

minority report Some essential movies on Netflix to pass the time...

We were talking about Steven Spielberg with La Vie d'Adèle, but we must not forget that the bugger is synonymous with Hollywood cinema. With his many masterpieces, he marked the childhood of several generations of cinephiles (E.T, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Hook…). He has also made films that are much darker and more mature than his reputation suggests. Minority Report is one of them. Adapted from Phillip K.Dick (the man who wrote Blade Runner, The Master of the High Castle, Totall Recall and especially Ubik), Minority Report is a very disturbing science fiction film, quite symptomatic of our time when the intelligence services of different countries spend their time spying all day long on their fellow citizens. Intelligent, spectacular, Minority Report is a breathless dive into a very near future, with an excellent Tom Cruise.

Pulp Fiction (1994) by Quentin Tarantino.

Pulp fiction 14 choses que vous ne saviez peut etre pas pas sur ce film culte Some essential movies on Netflix to pass the time...

Instead of praising Tarantino for being nauseated to explain how Pulp Fiction (Palme d'Or 1994) is an absolute masterpiece (in order: impeccable actors, mythical dialogues, epic music, reinvention of the way of telling a story in the cinema …), here is a small extract that allows us to understand the cult that surrounds this film, often copied, never equalled.

Old Boy (2003) by Chank-Woo Park.

Old Boy movie

Old Boy is certainly one of the most famous Asian films in the history of this continent. Indeed, this film, awarded the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004 (whose president of the jury was a certain Quentin Tarantino), is a masterpiece of weirdness and strangeness that goes beyond absolutely all cinematographic limits and human reason. This film tells the story of a man who, after spending 15 years in captivity without knowing the reason, finds himself free overnight, in a world that has undergone major upheavals since his kidnapping. His goal? Take revenge and find out the reason for this kidnapping. Live octopuses eaten on the set by the main actor for the needs of the film (octopus to whom the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival was dedicated in tribute to their sacrifices), battles with hammers, portrait of contemporary South Korea, Old Boy is an extraordinary film. Adapted from a very good manga of the 80s, if you have never seen it, get ready to live an extraordinary experience! And if you've seen it before, be prepared to relive a waking nightmare.

Léon (1994) by Luc Besson.

Whatever we say about Luc Besson, whether we consider him as a visionary artist or as a mogul producing only Hollywood sub-films, the man has marked the imagination of spectators around the world with films such as Nikita, The Big Blue, The Fifth Element or … Leon. It tells the story of a 12-year-old girl, Mathilda (Nathalie Portman), taken in by a hitman named Leon (Jean Reno) following the murder of her family by a psychotic corrupt police officer (Gary Oldman). A much more personal film at first for Besson (wasn't he married to a 15-year-old woman, Maïwenn at that time?), Léon is a moving story between a man seeking to protect the innocence of a young girl, in a violent world. Léon is probably the best film Luc Besson has ever made. Moving, with impressive action scenes, an absolutely perfect cast that allowed to discover a future Hollywood star, Leon is a true classic.

West Side Story (1961) by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise.

This is. We had to choose one for the end. It's hard to make a choice. Of course, we could have chosen The Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, etc. What if we gave back its place to West Side Story? That is to say, that of one of the best films in the history of cinema and one of the greatest musicals of all time, based on the music of the great Leonard Bernstein. Reinventing Romeo and Juliet in a context of war between Irish gang and Puerto Rican gang, West Side Story is a fascinating American odyssey and one of the most tragic romances of the 7th art. Simply the Hollywood of the golden age of studios at its best. Having conquered most of the planet, West Side Story was a historic success. You too let yourself be tempted by this absolute masterpiece.
